I have just bought a used BMW 328i - 1996 manual 5 speed 140,722 miles. Couple of questions: Power steering is leaking, can you fix it and the convertible roof motor have a issue. Do you look at convertible motors?
At the current mileage what type of work should I do for it? I want to do a tune-up, what is the cost normally?

Let us do a complete vehicle inspection for you. Then, we can suggest an itemized repair list with estimated costs for each item. Regarding your power steering question, we can inspect your power steering for leaks and also can also check the convertible roof motor for issues.

Hello,

I am considering purchasing a 2000 171,000 miles Civic VP with a known engine knock/rattle. I will have the opportunity to borrow it for a few days later this week or this weekend but I would like to have a mechanic familiar with Hondas listen to the knock and also just generally inspect the car. Three mechanics have given the seller three different opinions: 1)wrist pin (which I understand is a relatively rare problem in modern engines), 2) heat shield rattling (which I understand is a common problem with Honda) and 3) “something internal that could fail anytime”

The seller does not think the sound increases or changes with increasing rpms but is loudest when cold and idling (I think she just notices it when idling because the car is quieter).

Do you provide this type of service (inspection/repair estimate)? Do you have appointments available for the weekend or would a weekday be better? What type of fee would you charge for this?

Thanks!

Yes, we provide pre-purchase inspection. The inspection cost is $97.29 and we will need roughly 2 hours to complete the inspection. Please call so we can get you an appointment

While at a Toyota dealer for a recall, I was told my 2006 Prius engine water pump (mechanical coolant pump, not electric) was starting to leak & replacement would be $ 465. I do not see any drop of antifreeze on our garage floor & haven't replaced a water pump since the early 1990's on any vehicle. The Prius has 71,000 miles. Have you had any experience with these & what would your repair cost be, if I even need it ?
Thank you, Art Shaul

There is two type of water pump on your car (mechanical & electrical). The our price to replace the water pump is $309.67. When you do an engine job, do you replace the water pump, oil pump, rear main seal and other connecting parts? He also needs his A/C fixed and transmission checked (he was told it was leaking)? Another question, if I were to buy a crate motor would you install it??? Thank you for your attention. Frustrated mom in OK. :)

When you have that many things broken on a car we should look over the whole car to see if the cost of repair is more that you should put in the car.
I have a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLX VR6 and every time after starting the car, the car shuts off completely after 10-15min of driving and the "ECP" lamp turns on "no stuttering or hesitation at all when the car shuts off". I thought it might be a relay switch of some sort, the MAF, or an O2 sensor, but usually when there is a malfunction with the MAF or O2 sensor, the car will still drive, but fall to a default amount of fuel to deliver to the throttle.I looked under the hood and saw that the main radiator fan was jammed, but the auxiliary fan was still working fine, but for how long the main fan had died,i do not know. So I bought a new Cooling fan and replaced it myself which took about 1hour thinking this would maybe fix the issue "which would be an overheating issue". After installing the fan I turned on the ignition and noticed that both fans were not spinning, and would only turn on when the A/C was switched on. Now thinking to myself I probably should have changed the Coolant fan switch sensor as well.. So after that I drove it down the street back and forth for 10 minutes and the car switched off again. It did not work and the The Temperature gauge is working and holds a steady 175-190f. I took it to Pepboys, Spitfire Electrical where they didnt have the means to diagnose. If you guys find out the problem for this one. It will be for the books.

Yes, we can assist you with the diagnose of the car dying. We have the equipment and a dealer train VW tech to perform all testing. The diagnose fee will be $99.53.
I have a 04 ML 350 Mercedes and when I start it up it makes a whining sound but after the engine has warm up it stop. When I pull off from parking it makes a grinding sound-always stop after the engine has warmed up. What is it and how much does a Service A and Service B cost?

Hello and thank you for your inquiry. To address the noise you are experiencing on start up I would need to have you leave the vehicle with me so that one of my ASE Certified technicians can properly diagnose the problem. Diagnosing problems and quoting prices via e-mail and phone is difficult at best. This can lead to improper repairs and extra costs. To answer your question about the Mercedes scheduled service, the basic A schedule service is $199.95 + Tax and the basic B schedule service is $399.95 + Tax. I use the term basic because some supplemental services will be due at various mileage and time based intervals. I hope that I have helped and if you have any more questions or would like to schedule and appointment please feel free to e-mail or call.

I have a 2003 BMW 325I, and the check engine soon and oii light. Comes on intermittently. A service mechanic ran a diagnostic check and confirmed that the oil was running lean, but suggested that there was no major concerns and reset the everything. I added a quart of oil to it then noticed a small oil leak and the smell of burning oil when the ventillation systen is turned on. What do you think is going on and how much for a tune -up?

You have an oil leak and it is probably leaking on the exhaust manifold. We will need to determine where the oil is leaking from. The check engine light will require us to diagnose the concern. Call us 490-6552. Thanks John

answer for the 1995 toyota carmay owner: it's a great car. i've been selling and appraising new used autos for over 21 years.here is my answer:first off, get it detailed, inside out, about $75.00 well spent! the blinker-may just be a bulb, or fuse, (cheap to fix) yes get it fixed, also get current license plates, a new state inspection. people don't ask as many questions that way.the blinker is probably required to pass a state inspection anyway.may serve as brake light / tail light as well. About the A.C. > secret tip when do you plan to sell it? in what month? what state do you live in? is fall winter severe cold? tip>sell it on a cold, cold day, most appraisers (even me) can't tell if it works or not! in winter some people,in some cold states, some folks don't even care about the AC, but generally be careful about implying orally, oh, it's fine, it works, boasting , bragging about the vehicles ac, or condition. you could end up in court. (if you sell to an individual) so watch that! Some states even have laws that protect consumers from mis-representation of the sale of a used car between individuals. Texas other states, have no law regarding this. if you sell to a dealer, all dealers understand if they make a mistake, or miss something they own it! it's still a good idea, to draw up an as-is no warranty document when you sell it to anyone and have them the buyer sign it. you can pull one off the internet.also have a bill of sale with as-is no warranty written in big letters on the bill of sale. have buyer sign all documents, give him copies, you keep originals for your protection. this will help keep you out of court too. About getting it fixed well, that can be a potential money pit. but if you still decide to go ahead, with A.C.diagnosis, repair, my advice, i would be only use a certified Toyota Dealership for the diagnosis repairs. you will pay them 20%-30% more but, you'll get a written warranty from them on all parts and labor. (GOOD SELLING POINT) AND IN ALL PROBABILITY, THEIR DIAGNOSIS WILL BE A LOT MORE ACCURATE.IF YOU PROCEED, IF IT'S THE COMPRESSOR, ASK THEM ABOUT DIFFERENCE IN COST OF A RE-BUILT or re-con COMPRESSOR, AND A NEW ONE. I WOULD GO WITH A RE-CONDITIONED PARTS IN YOUR CASE, SINCE YOUR INTENT IS TO SELl IT. A DIAGNOSIS WILL RUN $65.00 -$85 AND MOST DEALERS WILL DEDUCT THAT charge FROM BILL IF YOU ELECT LET THEM REPAIR IT. power window, i would not fix, leave it in the up position.tell your potential buyer it does not work. body work is high$$$ i would not do that either.did you collect on an insurance settlement? was it your fault, or someone elses? would your insurance pay for it? if it was a hit run your un-insured motorist policy provision might pay part of it less $250.00 check into it. I would get all repairs done under one roof at one service facility.(pref Toyota) and mention to them, you wanna sell it. PUT A FOR SALE SIGN ON IT> THOSE MECHANICS MIGHT MAKE YOU AN OFFER RIGHT THERE! THEY CAN WORK ON IT CHEAPER THAN YOU CAN. THOSE GUYS ARE ALWAYS ON THE LOOK OUTFOR A DEAL get on internet Kelly Blue Book, NADA, OR BLACK BOOK, THEY ALL HAVE EVALUATORS, YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF TO GET A GOOD IDEA, WHAT IT WORTHTAKE AN AVERAGE OF ALL 3 TO GET AN IDEA, KELLY IS ALWAYS HIGH. SO IS BLACK BOOK, NADA IS WHAT ALL BANKS, LENDERS , AND CREDIT UNIONS USE WHEN MAKING AUTO LOANS. but appraise it like your the buyer not the seller, be critical, and if ac doesnt work , then do not check that box. i always scrutinize, a smoker's car, deduct about a $500.00 hit. tires need to be better than 50% tread depth.TIP> start a little, high you can always come down HOPE IVE HELPED YOU. GOOD LUCK-
